List of chairmen of the Federation Council (Russia)
The Chairman of the Federation Council is the presiding officer of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Federal Assembly of Russia. The Chairman is elected by the members of the Federation Council from among their number. They manage the internal affairs of the Council, chair sessions, and represent the Council in its relations with other government bodies and foreign entities. The Chairman also has the power to sign resolutions passed by the Council. In the event of the President's inability to perform their duties, the Chairman of the Federation Council is constitutionally designated as the first in line to assume the powers of the President.
The following individuals have served as Chairman of the Federation Council:
- Vladimir Shumeyko (January 13, 1994 – January 23, 1996)
- Yegor Stroyev (January 23, 1996 – December 5, 2001)
- Sergey Mironov (December 5, 2001 – May 18, 2011)
- Valentina Matviyenko (since September 21, 2011)
The list reflects the individuals who have formally held the office of Chairman of the Federation Council since its establishment in its current form under the 1993 Constitution. Note that acting chairpersons may have served in interim periods.
