Liberty Statue (Budapest)

The Liberty Statue (Hungarian: Szabadság Szobor) is a monument located on Gellért Hill in Budapest, Hungary. It was erected in 1947 in remembrance of the Soviet liberation of Hungary from Nazi occupation during World War II.

The statue is a prominent landmark in Budapest, easily visible from many parts of the city. It depicts a female figure holding a palm frond high in the air. Originally, the monument also featured inscriptions and smaller statues that glorified the Soviet liberators.

Following the fall of communism in 1989-1990, the inscriptions and smaller statues related to the Soviet Union were removed and relocated to Memento Park, a sculpture park dedicated to communist-era monuments. The main figure of the woman holding the palm frond was retained, and the monument was rededicated to all those who sacrificed their lives for Hungary's independence, freedom, and prosperity.

The Liberty Statue continues to be a popular tourist attraction and a symbol of Budapest.
