Kylinxia
Kylinxia is an extinct genus of arthropod known from exceptionally preserved fossils found in the Chengjiang biota of Yunnan, China. It dates back to the Cambrian period, specifically the Cambrian Stage 3, approximately 518 million years ago. Kylinxia is considered significant due to its mosaic of features that appear to bridge the gap between basal arthropods like Megacheira (great-appendage arthropods) and more crown-group arthropods, particularly those within the Deuteropoda clade (including euarthropods and anomalocaridids).
The holotype species is Kylinxia zhangi. The name "Kylinxia" refers to the Qilin, a mythical creature from Chinese mythology often depicted as a chimera with features of various animals. This alludes to the animal's mix of arthropod traits. The species name "zhangi" honors Zhang Xiguang, who collected the first specimen.
Key characteristics of Kylinxia include a distinct head shield, stalked eyes, five well-developed eyes, and a pair of large, raptorial frontal appendages bearing spines. Its segmented body exhibits a series of biramous (two-branched) appendages, with the upper branch functioning as a gill and the lower branch as a walking leg.
The evolutionary significance of Kylinxia lies in its potential to shed light on the origins of arthropod body plans and the relationships among early arthropod groups. Its combination of features, such as the great appendages and the more derived euarthropod-like morphology, suggests a transitional form that helps to clarify the evolution of arthropod appendage structures and the divergence of major arthropod lineages. Further study of Kylinxia fossils continues to provide valuable insights into the Cambrian explosion and the diversification of animal life during this period.
