Keith Smith (trumpeter)
Keith Smith (born 1940, died 2008) was a British jazz trumpeter known for his traditional jazz style and his dedication to preserving and performing the music of earlier jazz masters. He was a prominent figure in the British trad jazz scene for several decades.
Smith led several bands throughout his career, most notably Keith Smith's Hefty Jazz. The band frequently toured internationally, showcasing Smith's interpretations of classic jazz tunes and original compositions in the traditional style. He was known for his powerful trumpet playing and his engaging stage presence.
Smith also operated his own record label, Hefty Jazz, which released numerous albums featuring his own bands as well as other traditional jazz artists. This label played a significant role in documenting and promoting the traditional jazz sound. His efforts contributed significantly to the ongoing appreciation and performance of traditional jazz in the United Kingdom and beyond.
