Joseph Mitchell (Indiana judge)

Joseph Mitchell (born January 14, 1947) is an American attorney and former judge who served on the Indiana Court of Appeals.

Mitchell graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and from Indiana University School of Law – Indianapolis in 1972 with a Juris Doctor degree.

Prior to his judicial service, Mitchell was engaged in private legal practice in Greenfield, Indiana. He served as a judge of the Hancock County Superior Court from 1993 to 2007.

In 2007, Governor Mitch Daniels appointed Mitchell to the Indiana Court of Appeals, succeeding Judge Edward W. Najam, Jr. He served on the Court of Appeals until his retirement in 2017. During his time on the Court of Appeals, he authored numerous opinions on a wide range of legal issues.

Following his retirement from the bench, Mitchell returned to private practice in Indiana. He is a registered mediator and arbitrator, offering dispute resolution services. He has also been involved in various community organizations.
