John McNamara (VC)
John McNamara (VC) was an Irish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
McNamara was born in County Clare, Ireland. He served as a Private in the 94th Regiment of Foot (later The Connaught Rangers) of the British Army during the Crimean War.
He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions on 18 September 1855, during the Siege of Sevastopol. During a sortie by the enemy on the Quarries, Private McNamara and another man volunteered to return, under heavy fire, to bring up boxes of ammunition. They succeeded in their mission, contributing significantly to the repulse of the enemy.
His Victoria Cross is held by the National Army Museum, Chelsea.
