John McKie (bishop)

John McKie (1899-1978) was an Anglican bishop who served in several prominent roles within the Church of England and the Anglican Communion.

McKie was educated at Trinity College, Oxford, and ordained in 1923. His early ministry was spent in parish work before he became Warden of the Bishop's Hostel, Lincoln, in 1933. He then served as Principal of Queen's College, Birmingham (a theological college), from 1940 to 1945.

In 1945, McKie was consecrated Bishop of Egypt, a position he held until 1952. This was a significant and challenging role, responsible for the spiritual oversight of Anglicans across a vast geographical area and navigating complex political and social landscapes.

He was subsequently appointed Bishop of Guildford in 1952, a position he held until his retirement in 1961. During his tenure as Bishop of Guildford, he oversaw the diocese and contributed to the wider work of the Church of England.

Following his retirement from Guildford, McKie served as an Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Ely until 1969. He was also a significant figure in the ecumenical movement, promoting dialogue and cooperation between different Christian denominations. His contributions to theological education and his leadership within the Anglican Church made him a respected figure within religious circles.
