John McKenzie (musician)
John McKenzie (born 17 March 1955, London, England; died 10 June 2020, London, England) was a British bass guitarist renowned for his session work and collaborations with a diverse range of artists across various genres.
McKenzie's career spanned several decades, during which he established himself as a highly sought-after bassist known for his versatility and groove. He contributed to recordings and performances for artists including Dr. John, Everything but the Girl, Alison Moyet, Seal, The Pretenders, Eurythmics, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Manic Street Preachers, and Wham!. He was also a member of the bands Global Village Trucking Company and The Europeans.
His playing style was characterized by its solid foundation, inventive lines, and ability to complement a song's arrangement. He was comfortable playing rock, pop, soul, funk, and jazz-influenced music.
Beyond his session work, McKenzie was also known for his contributions to film soundtracks.
He passed away in June 2020 after battling myelodysplastic syndrome. His contribution to popular music as a session musician is significant, though his name may not be as widely recognized as the headline artists he supported.
