John Linnell (cabinet maker)

John Linnell (1729-1796) was a prominent English furniture designer and cabinet maker, active in London during the Rococo and Neoclassical periods. He was the son of William Linnell, also a cabinet maker, from whom he inherited a well-established workshop.

Linnell is known for his finely crafted and innovative furniture, which often incorporated marquetry, carving, and elaborate ormolu mounts. He catered to a wealthy clientele, including members of the aristocracy and gentry. His work reflected the changing tastes of the 18th century, evolving from the flamboyant Rococo style to the more restrained and symmetrical Neoclassical designs.

After inheriting his father's business around 1763, Linnell expanded its operations and broadened its design repertoire. He employed a team of skilled craftsmen and designers, and his workshop produced a wide range of furniture, including cabinets, tables, chairs, beds, and looking glasses. He is also known for designing complete interiors.

Linnell's work can be found in numerous museums and private collections. He is considered one of the most important English furniture makers of the 18th century, contributing significantly to the development of English furniture design. His legacy lies in the high quality of his craftsmanship, the elegance of his designs, and his adaptation to the evolving styles of the period.
