John Collins (Continental Congress)

John Collins (1717 – 1795) was a delegate to the Continental Congress representing Rhode Island from 1778 to 1781. He also served as the Governor of Rhode Island from 1786 to 1790.

Born in Newport, Rhode Island, Collins was largely self-educated. He became a prominent merchant in Newport before entering politics. He held several local offices, including serving as a justice of the peace and a member of the Rhode Island General Assembly.

During the American Revolution, Collins was a strong advocate for independence. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, he played a role in the debates and decisions related to the war effort. He also served on various committees, including those dealing with finance and maritime affairs.

After his service in the Continental Congress, Collins returned to Rhode Island and was elected Governor in 1786. A significant challenge during his governorship was the economic turmoil that followed the Revolution, including the debate over paper money and the ratification of the United States Constitution. Rhode Island was initially hesitant to ratify the Constitution. Collins supported ratification, but Rhode Island was the last of the original thirteen states to ratify, finally doing so in 1790 after he had left office.

Collins died in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1795. He is remembered for his service to Rhode Island and the United States during a critical period in their history.
