John Bowes (cricketer)
John Bowes was an English first-class cricketer who played for Yorkshire County Cricket Club between 1931 and 1947. A right-arm fast bowler and useful lower-order batsman, Bowes took 723 wickets at an average of 15.58 in his career. He was a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1933.
Bowes was known for his aggressive bowling style and his ability to move the ball both ways. He was a key member of the dominant Yorkshire side of the 1930s, helping them win seven County Championships. He also played in five Test matches for England, taking 11 wickets. His Test career was curtailed by injury.
After retiring from cricket, Bowes worked as a journalist and commentator. He remained a popular figure in Yorkshire cricket circles.
