John Boswell (freemason)
John Boswell (1740-1795) was a Scottish biographer, diarist, and lawyer, best known for his biography of Samuel Johnson, Life of Johnson. Less widely known is that Boswell was also a Freemason.
Boswell's involvement with Freemasonry began in Edinburgh. He was initiated into Canongate Kilwinning, Lodge No. 2, on August 13, 1759. He took an active role in the lodge, serving as its Master in 1773 and 1774. Lodge records show his consistent attendance and contributions to lodge activities.
Boswell's diaries and letters contain references to his Masonic activities, although he often employed a degree of discretion in discussing lodge matters. He clearly valued his Masonic connections, utilizing them for social networking and professional advancement. The fraternal bonds within the Freemason community provided him with access to influential individuals in various fields, including law, literature, and politics.
Boswell's commitment to Freemasonry appears to have waned somewhat later in his life. While he remained a member, his recorded participation decreased as he focused on his writing and legal career in London. However, his initial enthusiasm and active involvement in Canongate Kilwinning are well-documented, confirming his significant engagement with the fraternity during his earlier years. His membership further underscores the prevalence of Freemasonry among educated and influential men in 18th-century Scotland and England.
