John Bethune (Scottish minister)

John Bethune (1723-1806) was a Scottish minister of the Church of Scotland. He is primarily known for his long ministry in the parish of Moulin, Perthshire, and for his contributions to Gaelic literature and education.

Bethune was born in Skye and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He was licensed to preach by the Presbytery of Skye in 1745. In 1751, he was presented to the parish of Moulin, a charge he held until his death.

During his time in Moulin, Bethune was a strong advocate for the Gaelic language and culture. He recognized the importance of education for the Gaelic-speaking population and worked to improve schools in his parish. He was also a supporter of the Society for Propagating Christian Knowledge (SPCK), which promoted education in the Highlands and Islands.

Bethune's most significant contribution was his translation of several religious texts into Gaelic, including portions of the Bible and catechisms. He understood the need for religious materials in the vernacular to effectively reach his parishioners. His Gaelic translations were widely used and played a crucial role in preserving and promoting the language.

He was married to Janet Grant and had several children. John Bethune died in 1806 and is remembered as a dedicated minister, a champion of Gaelic culture, and a significant figure in the religious and educational life of the Scottish Highlands.
