Jappeloup
Jappeloup was a French Selle Français show-jumping horse, ridden by Pierre Durand Jr. He was known for his small size (standing only 15 hands high) and remarkable athleticism, overcoming initial challenges and doubts to become one of the most celebrated show-jumping horses in history.
Jappeloup and Durand achieved significant success, including:
- Olympic Gold Medal: Individual gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
- Olympic Bronze Medal: Team bronze medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
- World Championship Silver Medal: Individual silver medal at the 1990 World Equestrian Games in Stockholm.
- European Championship Gold Medal: Individual gold medal at the 1987 European Championships in St Gallen.
- Numerous Grand Prix victories: Winning various prestigious Grand Prix competitions throughout their career.
Jappeloup's story is one of overcoming adversity and achieving greatness through dedication and partnership. His unlikely success, given his size and early temperament issues, made him a popular figure in the equestrian world and beyond. He is remembered as a symbol of perseverance and the power of the bond between horse and rider. He retired from competition in 1991 and died in 1991 at the age of 16. A biographical film, Jappeloup, was released in 2013, further popularizing his story.
