Isaac Ott
Isaac Ott (1847-1916) was an American neurologist, physiologist, and pharmacologist. He is known for his contributions to the understanding of the effects of various drugs on the central nervous system, particularly the localization of brain function.
Ott received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1869. He then studied in Europe with prominent physiologists such as Carl Ludwig and Claude Bernard. Upon his return to the United States, he held positions at various institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania and Lafayette College.
Ott’s research focused primarily on the physiological effects of drugs and electrical stimulation on different regions of the brain and spinal cord. He conducted extensive experiments on animals to map out the motor and sensory functions of various brain areas. His work contributed to the developing field of cerebral localization.
Ott authored numerous scientific papers and several books, including "The Action of Medicines" (1878) and "Text-Book of Physiology" (1907). His research and publications helped advance the understanding of the nervous system and the physiological action of drugs, making him a significant figure in American medical science.
