JanusVR

JanusVR was a real-time 3D internet browser and development platform. It allowed users to create, explore, and share interconnected 3D environments, functioning as a virtual world system accessible through a standard web browser. Unlike traditional websites that are typically viewed in a 2D format, JanusVR presented content within navigable 3D spaces.

Users could build virtual environments using a simple markup language (JanusVR Markup Language, or JML) or by importing 3D models created in external software. These environments, often referred to as "rooms," could be linked together to create interconnected worlds, effectively building a 3D web.

JanusVR supported multi-user interaction, allowing users to inhabit the same virtual spaces and communicate with each other through text chat, voice chat, and positional audio. Avatars represented users within these environments.

Key features of JanusVR included:

  • 3D Web Browsing: Exploration of online content in immersive 3D environments.
  • User-Generated Content: Tools for users to create and share their own 3D spaces and experiences.
  • Multi-User Interaction: Support for shared virtual environments and real-time communication.
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: Designed to function within standard web browsers on various operating systems.
  • Spatial Audio: Emulation of realistic soundscapes within the 3D environments, based on user proximity.

The project was initially developed by James McCrae, and while actively developed and used for a period, its current development status is unclear. Resources related to JanusVR may remain available online through community archives and documentation.
