Jack Riley (ice hockey, born 1919)

Jack Riley (March 23, 1919 – October 12, 2016) was an American ice hockey player and coach. He is best known for coaching the United States men's national ice hockey team to a gold medal at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley.

Riley played college hockey at Dartmouth College, where he was a standout player. After graduating, he served in the United States Army during World War II. Following the war, he returned to Dartmouth as head coach of the men's ice hockey team, a position he held for over three decades (1950-1982).

In addition to his coaching role at Dartmouth, Riley was heavily involved with USA Hockey. He coached the U.S. National Team on several occasions, most famously leading them to victory over the heavily favored Soviet Union team at the 1960 Olympics, a victory often considered an upset.

Riley was inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame in 1979. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of American ice hockey, both for his success on the ice and his contributions to the development of the sport in the United States. His coaching style emphasized discipline, teamwork, and a strong work ethic. He left a lasting legacy on Dartmouth hockey and American hockey in general.
