Jón Magnússon (politician)
Jón Magnússon (born January 16, 1859, died June 23, 1926) was an Icelandic politician and Prime Minister of Iceland on two separate occasions.
Magnússon was a member of the Home Rule Party (Heimastjórnarflokkurinn) and later a founder and leader of the Conservative Party (Íhaldsflokkurinn), which eventually merged into the Independence Party (Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn). He served as a Member of Parliament (Alþingismaður) for various constituencies from 1886 until his death.
His first term as Prime Minister was from 1917 to 1922, during a period of significant change and growth for Iceland as it moved towards greater autonomy from Denmark. During this period, Iceland gained recognition as a sovereign state, although still under the Danish Crown.
Magnússon served a second term as Prime Minister from 1924 until his death in 1926. He is remembered as a prominent figure in Icelandic political history, known for his strong leadership and contributions to the development of Icelandic independence. He was also Minister of Finance for a significant portion of his political career.
