Iron Gate (Diocletian's Palace)

The Iron Gate, also known as Porta Ferrea, is one of the four principal gates of Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia. Situated on the eastern wall of the palace, it was originally a heavily fortified entrance intended for military use. Its name derives from the iron cladding that once adorned its wooden doors.

Unlike the Silver, Golden, and Bronze Gates, the Iron Gate was not part of the original ceremonial route leading to the Peristyle. Instead, it provided a direct access point to the eastern section of the palace, primarily housing the military barracks and other service facilities.

Over the centuries, the Iron Gate and its surrounding area have undergone significant transformations. During the Middle Ages, a small church, the Church of Our Lady of the Belfry, was built within the gate's passage. This involved incorporating parts of the original Roman structure into the church's construction, showcasing the adaptation and reuse of the palace's architecture throughout history.

Today, the Iron Gate is an integral part of Split's historic city center. The area around the gate is a bustling commercial and residential space, with shops, cafes, and apartments integrated into the ancient structure. The church within the gate passage remains a notable landmark, offering a tangible connection to the site's multi-layered history. While much of the original Roman structure remains, the gate now reflects a blend of Roman, medieval, and modern architectural influences.
