Cumshewa
Cumshewa was a significant village of the Haida people, located on Cumshewa Island in Haida Gwaii (formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands) in British Columbia, Canada. The village was historically occupied by the Cumshewaas, a Haida lineage.
Cumshewa's importance stemmed from its strategic location for resource access and trade. The village served as a major trading center and was known for the wealth and influence of its chiefs. Evidence suggests long-term occupation and a sophisticated social structure.
Like many Haida villages, Cumshewa suffered significant population decline due to introduced diseases during the 19th century. This, coupled with cultural assimilation policies, led to the abandonment of the village.
Today, Cumshewa stands as an important archaeological site, offering insights into Haida history, culture, and social organization. The remains of longhouses and totem poles provide tangible connections to the past. Efforts are underway to preserve and protect the site in collaboration with the Haida Nation.
