Iran LNG
Iran LNG is a liquefied natural gas (LNG) project located in Tombak Port, Bushehr Province, Iran. It is one of several LNG projects planned or under development in Iran with the aim of exporting the country's vast natural gas reserves.
The project has faced numerous delays and setbacks due to international sanctions imposed on Iran, particularly those related to its nuclear program. These sanctions have hindered access to foreign investment, technology, and equipment necessary for the construction and operation of the LNG plant.
The envisioned capacity of Iran LNG is approximately 10.8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) across two trains. The feedstock for the plant is intended to be natural gas from the South Pars gas field, one of the largest gas fields in the world.
As of 2023, the project remains largely stalled despite some progress on infrastructure development. Future progress is highly dependent on the geopolitical situation and the lifting or easing of sanctions against Iran. If completed, Iran LNG would be a significant step towards Iran becoming a major LNG exporter.
