Hunt-class minesweeper (1916)

The Hunt-class minesweepers of 1916 were a class of minesweepers built for the Royal Navy during World War I. They were designed to be smaller and faster than previous minesweeper designs, allowing them to operate in coastal waters and sweep mines more efficiently. These ships were built to a common design, but with variations in hull construction, engines, and fitting out depending on the builder.

Key characteristics of the Hunt-class included their relatively shallow draft, allowing them to operate closer to shore than larger vessels. They were typically armed with a single 4-inch gun for self-defense and were equipped with minesweeping gear appropriate for the time, including paravanes and sweeps.

The Hunt-class minesweepers played a vital role in maintaining maritime safety during and after World War I by clearing shipping lanes of mines laid by enemy forces. A significant number of these vessels were built, with production continuing throughout the war. After the war, many were sold into civilian service or scrapped, though some remained in service with the Royal Navy for a number of years.

The class is also sometimes referred to as the Aberdare class, after HMS Aberdare, the lead ship of the class. Distinctions between ships within the class can sometimes be blurred due to the variations in construction and refits they received over their operational lifespan.
