Hugh Foss (bishop)

Hugh Foss (1885 – 1967) was an Anglican bishop who served in the Church of England.

Foss was educated at Marlborough College and Keble College, Oxford. He was ordained in 1910 and served as a curate in Stratford, East London, and then as a chaplain in France during the First World War. After the war, he held various positions including Vicar of St. Botolph’s, Aldgate, London.

In 1937, Foss was consecrated as the Bishop of Osaka in the Nippon Sei Ko Kai, the Anglican Church in Japan. He served in this role during a turbulent period leading up to and during the Second World War. After the war, he played a significant role in the rebuilding of the church in Japan.

He retired from Osaka in 1955 and returned to England, where he served as an assistant bishop in the Diocese of London until his death in 1967. He is remembered for his dedication to the Anglican Church in Japan and his efforts in promoting interfaith dialogue.
