Hugh Cholmondeley (soldier)

Hugh Cholmondeley (1662 – 18 February 1725) was an English soldier and landowner, primarily remembered for his military service during the Williamite War in Ireland and his subsequent political career.

Born into the influential Cholmondeley family of Cheshire, he was the son of Robert Cholmondeley, 1st Viscount Cholmondeley of Kells. He distinguished himself during the Williamite War, fighting alongside William of Orange against the Jacobite forces loyal to James II. Cholmondeley played a role in the pivotal Battle of the Boyne in 1690 and the subsequent sieges and campaigns aimed at securing Williamite control over Ireland.

Following the war, Cholmondeley continued his military service, rising through the ranks. He also benefited from the patronage and connections of his family, which held significant political influence. In addition to his military career, he held several public offices, including Member of Parliament for Cheshire from 1701 to 1702.

Cholmondeley inherited substantial estates from his family, consolidating their landholdings in Cheshire. He married Hester Edwards, daughter of Sir Francis Edwards, 4th Baronet. He was succeeded by his son, George Cholmondeley, 3rd Earl of Cholmondeley. His career exemplifies the opportunities available to members of well-connected families during the late 17th and early 18th centuries, combining military service, political appointments, and landownership to achieve prominence.
