Horsley Priory (Surrey)

Horsley Priory, also known as East Horsley Priory, was a religious house in Surrey, England. Founded in the 12th century, around 1160, it was a small Augustinian priory dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It was located in East Horsley, close to the village church.

The priory never became a wealthy or particularly influential establishment. Its endowments were relatively modest. The community likely consisted of only a small number of canons.

Over the centuries, Horsley Priory experienced the various challenges common to monastic institutions of the time, including financial difficulties and declining numbers.

The priory was dissolved as part of King Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries. It surrendered to the Crown in 1536. After dissolution, the priory buildings and lands passed into private ownership.

Little remains of the original priory buildings today. Some remnants may be incorporated into later structures built on or near the site. The precise location of the original priory buildings has been the subject of some historical debate and archaeological investigation. Records and archaeological finds provide the main sources of information about its history and layout.
