His Eminence (horse)
His Eminence was an American Thoroughbred racehorse foaled in 1908. Bred and owned by James R. Keene's Castleton Farm, he was sired by Commando out of the mare Dominga.
His racing career, although brief, showed promise. His most notable victory came in the 1911 Kentucky Derby. He was ridden by jockey Carroll H. Shilling and defeated the heavily favored Meridian by a neck. The race was run on a muddy track, which may have contributed to the upset.
Following his Kentucky Derby win, His Eminence suffered a career-ending injury. He was retired to stud at Castleton Farm. While he did sire some winners, he did not achieve significant success as a stallion.
His Eminence is primarily remembered for his victory in the 1911 Kentucky Derby and the upset he delivered to Meridian. He represents a moment of unexpected triumph in the history of American horse racing. His career serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sport and the potential for even less-fancied horses to achieve greatness.
