Edward Stanley (1790–1863)

Edward Stanley (1790–1863), 14th Earl of Derby, was a British statesman, three-time Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, and leader of the Conservative Party for over two decades.

Born into a prominent Lancashire family, Stanley was educated at Eton College and Christ Church, Oxford. He entered Parliament in 1812 as the Member for Stockbridge, initially as a Whig. His early political career was marked by his support for reform measures, including the abolition of slavery.

He gradually moved towards the Conservative Party, serving in several high-ranking government positions, including Chief Secretary for Ireland and Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. A gifted orator, Stanley was known for his eloquent speeches and sharp debating skills, earning him the nickname "Rupert of Debate".

He served as Prime Minister three times: in 1852, 1858-1859, and 1866-1868. His ministries were relatively short-lived and characterized by political instability. Notable achievements during his premierships include the passage of the 1867 Reform Act, which significantly expanded the electorate. This act, while championed by his government, was a controversial move given Stanley's earlier reservations about democratic reform.

Stanley was also a distinguished classical scholar, known for his translation of Homer's Iliad into blank verse, published in 1864. He was succeeded as Prime Minister by Benjamin Disraeli. He died in 1863.
