Dewar (caste)
The Dewar are a caste traditionally found in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. They are classified as a Most Backward Class (MBC) in Tamil Nadu and as a Scheduled Caste (SC) in Kerala. Historically, their traditional occupations included agricultural labor, fishing, and the manufacture of salt.
The social and economic conditions of the Dewar community have been historically marginalized. Government policies and reservation benefits in education and employment aim to address these historical disadvantages and improve their socio-economic standing.
Further research is needed to fully understand the complex history, social structures, and cultural practices of the Dewar caste. Information regarding specific sub-divisions, endogamous practices, religious beliefs unique to the community, and current socio-economic conditions requires expansion and verification.
