Herod (horse)

Herod (1758 – 1780) was an influential Thoroughbred stallion who was one of the three founding sires of modern Thoroughbreds, along with Eclipse and Matchem. He was foaled in England and was owned by the Duke of Cumberland.

Herod was known for his stamina and soundness, qualities which he passed on to many of his offspring. He was a successful racehorse, winning numerous races, although his racing career was somewhat overshadowed by that of Eclipse. His most notable victory was in the Jockey Club Plate.

After his racing career, Herod became a highly sought-after stallion. He sired numerous successful racehorses and broodmares, contributing significantly to the development of the Thoroughbred breed. His male-line descendants continued to be influential for many generations.

Key characteristics associated with Herod's progeny included soundness, stamina, and a tendency towards a heavier build compared to the Eclipse line. He is considered a crucial link in tracing pedigrees of many modern Thoroughbreds. His name appears frequently in the pedigrees of numerous champion racehorses.
