Henry Fowler (hymn writer)

Henry Fowler (1823-1888) was an English clergyman and hymn writer. He was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge, and ordained in 1849. He served as a curate and then as Vicar of Barnwood, Gloucestershire, for over 30 years.

Fowler is best known for writing the hymn "We give Thee but Thine own," a popular offertory hymn which is still sung in many churches today. It first appeared in Hymns Ancient and Modern in 1861. His other hymns, while less well-known, also reflect his deep faith and concern for social justice. He also authored several religious works and contributed to various periodicals.

Fowler's hymns are characterised by their simplicity, sincerity, and focus on practical Christian living. He is remembered as a devoted pastor and a gifted hymn writer who made a significant contribution to the church's hymnody.
