Headquarters Joint Operations Command (Australia)

Headquarters Joint Operations Command (HQJOC) is the Australian Defence Force (ADF) command responsible for planning, controlling, and conducting ADF joint and combined operations. It is the highest-level operational command within the ADF.

HQJOC is responsible for the full spectrum of military operations, from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to high-intensity combat operations. It exercises operational control over all deployed ADF forces, both within Australia and overseas. This includes land, maritime, and air forces.

The command is based at a purpose-built facility at Bungendore, New South Wales, near Canberra. The Commander Joint Operations (CJOPS) is the senior officer in command and is typically a three-star officer (Vice Admiral, Lieutenant General, or Air Marshal). CJOPS reports directly to the Chief of the Defence Force (CDF).

HQJOC's functions include:

  • Planning and directing joint military operations.
  • Coordinating ADF support to civilian authorities.
  • Maintaining situational awareness and providing timely advice to the CDF and the government.
  • Developing and maintaining joint operational doctrine and training.
  • Liaising with other government agencies and international partners.

HQJOC plays a crucial role in ensuring the ADF's readiness to respond to a wide range of threats and challenges, both domestically and internationally. It is a key component of Australia's national security architecture.
