Hauz Khas
Hauz Khas is a neighbourhood in South Delhi, India. It is known for its historic Hauz Khas Complex, a medieval reservoir with Islamic architecture dating back to the Delhi Sultanate period. "Hauz" is an Urdu word meaning "water tank" or "reservoir," and "Khas" means "royal."
The Hauz Khas Complex features a large water tank built by Alauddin Khilji in the 13th century to supply water to Siri, the second city of Delhi. Around the tank are various structures, including a mosque, a tomb (believed to be that of Firoz Shah Tughlaq), pavilions, and madrasas (Islamic schools) built during the reigns of Firoz Shah Tughlaq and other rulers of the Tughlaq dynasty in the 14th century.
In modern times, Hauz Khas has evolved into a trendy and upscale neighbourhood. Hauz Khas Village, located near the Complex, is a popular hub for art, fashion, music, and food, with numerous boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, bars, and cafes. The juxtaposition of the ancient ruins of the Hauz Khas Complex with the modern, vibrant atmosphere of Hauz Khas Village makes it a unique and popular destination for both tourists and locals. The area has also become a sought-after residential area. The Deer Park located near the Hauz Khas Complex provides a green space for recreation and relaxation.
