Harry W. Hill (admiral)

Harry Wilbur Hill (May 15, 1890 – July 19, 1971) was an admiral in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a key figure in several major amphibious landings in the Pacific Theater.

Born in Hillsborough, Wisconsin, Hill graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1911. His early career included service on battleships and destroyers.

During World War II, Hill distinguished himself as a commander of amphibious forces. He played a crucial role in the Guadalcanal campaign, serving as commander of Transport Division 12, responsible for landing troops and supplies. He subsequently commanded Task Force 53 for the landings on the Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands in early 1944.

Hill is perhaps best known for his command during the Battle of Iwo Jima in February 1945. As commander of Task Force 51 (the amphibious force), he oversaw the complex and challenging landings on the island, facing fierce Japanese resistance. His leadership was critical in securing the initial beachhead and supporting the subsequent advance inland.

Following World War II, Hill served in various administrative positions in the Navy before retiring with the rank of admiral. He was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal multiple times for his valor and leadership throughout the war. His contribution to the U.S. Navy's success in the Pacific remains significant in the study of amphibious warfare.
