Halush

Halush (also sometimes transliterated as Haluska, Halušky, or Galushki) refers to a variety of thick, soft noodles or dumplings that are popular in Central and Eastern European cuisines. The dish typically consists of these noodles or dumplings combined with toppings such as cheese, fried onions, bacon, cabbage, or stewed meats. The exact preparation, ingredients, and accompaniments vary significantly depending on the region and cultural influences.

In many preparations, the noodles or dumplings are made from a simple dough of flour (typically wheat flour), eggs, and sometimes milk or water. This dough is then either rolled out and cut into small squares or irregularly shaped pieces, or spooned directly into boiling water. The resulting noodles have a chewy texture.

Halush is considered a comfort food in many countries where it is consumed. Variations of the dish are found in Slovak, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Polish, and Belarusian cuisines, among others. The name and specific ingredients can differ regionally; for example, in Slovakia, bryndzové halušky are made with sheep cheese.
