Gulian Verplanck (1637–1684)
Gulian Verplanck (sometimes spelled Ver Planck) was a prominent merchant and landowner in colonial New York. He was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, in 1637 and emigrated to New Netherland (later New York) around 1660.
Verplanck became a successful merchant involved in various trading ventures, including trade with the West Indies. He acquired significant landholdings in the Hudson River Valley, particularly in what is now Dutchess County, New York. These lands contributed significantly to his wealth and influence.
He held various civic positions in New York City, reflecting his standing within the community. Verplanck was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church and played an active role in its affairs.
Gulian Verplanck married Hendricka Wessels in 1661. They had several children, and the Verplanck family became one of the most influential and well-connected families in New York. His descendants continued to play a significant role in the political, social, and economic life of the region for generations. He died in 1684, leaving behind a substantial estate that solidified the Verplanck family's position for years to come.
