Zerdava

Zerdava refers to a breed of livestock guardian dog originating from Turkey, specifically the northeastern regions around Kars and Ardahan. These dogs are known for their large size, powerful build, and independent nature. Historically and presently, Zerdavas are used to protect livestock, primarily sheep and goats, from predators such as wolves, bears, and jackals. They are often employed in conjunction with other livestock guardian dog breeds like the Kangal. Zerdavas are characterized by a thick, double coat that provides insulation against harsh weather conditions. Their coat color is commonly cream, white, or light yellow, sometimes with darker markings. They are known for their courage, loyalty, and territoriality, making them effective protectors of livestock. The breed is not yet widely recognized by major kennel clubs, and breeding efforts are focused primarily within Turkey.
