Guadalajara (Senate constituency)
Guadalajara is a Senate constituency (Spanish: circunscripción senatorial) in Mexico. It refers to the area that elects senators to the Mexican Senate representing the state of Jalisco, where Guadalajara is the state capital and largest city. The exact boundaries of the constituency are coextensive with the boundaries of the state of Jalisco.
Senators are elected using a mixed system. Each state, including Jalisco, elects two senators by simple majority vote. In addition, a third senator is assigned to each state based on the principle of first minority, awarded to the political party or coalition that received the second-highest number of votes. This system ensures representation for both the majority and a significant minority within the state. The senators elected from Guadalajara (i.e., Jalisco) represent the entire state and are tasked with representing its interests at the federal level.
