Greg Robinson (American football coach)

Greg Robinson (born September 8, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, died January 5, 2022) was an American football coach with a career spanning college and professional levels. He was primarily known for his work as a defensive coordinator.

Robinson's coaching career began at the college level, holding various positions at schools including Pacific, Cal State Fullerton, UCLA, and Texas. He gained significant recognition during his tenure as defensive coordinator at the University of Texas under head coach Mack Brown. During his time at Texas, the Longhorns defense was consistently ranked among the nation's best and contributed significantly to the team's success, including winning the 2005 National Championship.

Robinson transitioned to the National Football League (NFL) where he served as defensive coordinator for the New York Jets, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs. His time in the NFL was met with varying degrees of success and criticism regarding his defensive schemes and player development.

Following his stint in the NFL, Robinson returned to college coaching. He served as the head coach at Syracuse University from 2005 to 2008. His tenure at Syracuse was largely unsuccessful, marked by losing seasons and struggles to improve the program.

After being fired from Syracuse, Robinson later served as defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan under head coach Rich Rodriguez. He also held coaching positions at San Jose State University and Austin Peay State University before retiring.

Robinson was known for his fiery personality and demanding coaching style. He earned a reputation as a dedicated and passionate coach who sought to instill discipline and toughness in his players. While his success varied across different teams and levels, he remained a respected figure in the football coaching community for several decades.

Robinson passed away in January 2022 after battling cancer.
