Grabštejn
Grabštejn (German: Grafenstein) is a castle located in the Liberec Region of the Czech Republic, near the town of Chotyně. It sits on a basalt hill overlooking the surrounding landscape.
History:
The castle was originally built in the 13th century, likely by the Donín family (also known as Dohna). Over the centuries, it passed through various noble families and underwent several renovations and expansions, reflecting changing architectural styles. Notably, the castle was significantly rebuilt in the 16th century in the Renaissance style. During the Thirty Years' War, Grabštejn was besieged and damaged. After the war, it was repaired, but it experienced further decline.
In the 19th century, the Clam-Gallas family owned the castle. Following World War II, Grabštejn was confiscated by the Czechoslovak state. It fell into disrepair for a period.
Present Day:
Grabštejn is now a state-owned castle and is open to the public. Restoration efforts have been undertaken to preserve and restore the castle's historical features. Visitors can explore the castle's interiors, courtyards, and chapel, which contains notable Renaissance paintings. The castle often hosts cultural events and exhibitions. The surrounding grounds offer scenic views.
