Gerard Smith (musician)
Gerard Smith (January 4, 1975 – April 20, 2011) was an American musician best known as the bassist for the Brooklyn-based band TV on the Radio. He joined the band in 2005 and contributed to their critically acclaimed albums Return to Cookie Mountain (2006), Dear Science (2008), and Nine Types of Light (2011).
Prior to joining TV on the Radio, Smith was a member of the band Peasant. He was a multi-instrumentalist, also playing keyboards and guitar. His bass playing was noted for its melodic lines and rhythmic complexity, contributing significantly to TV on the Radio's distinctive sound.
In late 2010, Smith was diagnosed with lung cancer. He continued to perform with TV on the Radio during his treatment, but ultimately succumbed to the disease in April 2011, shortly before the release of Nine Types of Light. His death was mourned by the music community. He is remembered for his talent, his contributions to TV on the Radio's success, and his warm personality.
