George Elliot (Royal Navy officer, born 1813)
George Elliot (1813 – 1901) was a British Royal Navy officer.
Elliot entered the Royal Navy in 1828. His career saw him involved in various postings, including service in the Mediterranean and off the coast of China. He was promoted to Captain in 1841.
Elliot notably served as the Commander-in-Chief of the China Station from 1866 to 1869, holding the rank of Vice-Admiral. During his tenure in China, he was responsible for maintaining British naval power and protecting British interests in the region, a period marked by considerable political and economic tensions. He oversaw the naval response to incidents involving British merchant ships and local populations.
He was promoted to Admiral in 1870. Elliot retired from active service later in his career and died in 1901.
