George Butler (bishop)

George Butler (1774 – 1853) was an English clergyman and educator who served as Headmaster of Harrow School and later as Bishop of Lichfield.

Born in Preston, Lancashire, he was educated at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he distinguished himself academically, becoming Senior Wrangler in 1794. He was elected a Fellow of his college shortly after.

Butler was appointed Headmaster of Harrow School in 1805, a position he held for nearly thirty years until 1829. During his tenure, Harrow underwent significant growth and increased in prestige. He is credited with modernizing the curriculum and emphasizing classical studies. Among his notable pupils were Lord Byron, Robert Peel, and Henry John Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston.

After retiring from Harrow, Butler was appointed Dean of Peterborough in 1842. In 1836, he had been appointed Chancellor of the Diocese of Peterborough, a role he continued to hold concurrently. He was consecrated Bishop of Lichfield in 1836, a position he held until his death in 1853. As Bishop, he was known for his commitment to education and his support for church building and restoration in his diocese.

Butler was married twice, first to Sarah Maria Gray, and after her death, to Jemima French. He had a large family, including several sons who also pursued careers in the Church or in education. He is remembered as a significant figure in the history of Harrow School and the Church of England.
