George Barlow (American poet)
George Barlow (1946 – 2021) was an American poet and educator, primarily associated with the Black Arts Movement and the Third World Communications network. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he attended Roosevelt University and the University of Iowa Writers' Workshop. Barlow's work often explored themes of racial identity, social justice, urban life, and personal relationships. He was known for his direct and accessible language, and his poems frequently incorporated elements of jazz and blues rhythms.
Barlow's published collections include Gumbo (1981), For the Love of Willie (1995), and Darlingtonia (2002). His poems have also appeared in numerous anthologies and literary journals. In addition to his writing, Barlow taught creative writing and literature at various institutions, including Oberlin College and the University of Iowa. He also served as a mentor to many emerging writers. He was a recipient of several awards and fellowships, recognizing his contributions to American literature.
