Polivoks

The Polivoks is a duophonic analog synthesizer manufactured in the Soviet Union from 1982 to 1990. It was designed by Vladimir Kuzmin and is known for its distinctive, often harsh and aggressive sound. Its appearance is characterized by its gray metal case and unusual layout, including Cyrillic labeling in early models.

The Polivoks features two voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), a voltage-controlled filter (VCF), and a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA). It also includes two envelope generators, one dedicated to the VCF and one to the VCA, as well as a modulation LFO.

The filter section is particularly notable, often described as unstable and capable of producing a wide range of sounds, from smooth sweeps to harsh, distorted tones. This unique character is a significant factor in the Polivoks' cult following among electronic music producers and sound designers.

The Polivoks has gained popularity in recent years due to its unique sonic qualities and relative affordability compared to other vintage synthesizers. It is often used in genres such as techno, industrial, and experimental music. Several software emulations and hardware clones of the Polivoks have been developed, seeking to replicate its distinctive sound.
