Gan Ning

Gan Ning (甘寧), (died 220), courtesy name Xingba (興霸), was a military general serving under the warlord Sun Quan during the late Eastern Han dynasty and early Three Kingdoms period of China. He is best known for his service in the Battle of Red Cliffs and his pivotal role in the Battle of Xiaoyao Ford.

Born in Linjiang County, Ba Commandery (present-day Zhong County, Chongqing), Gan Ning was a notorious figure in his youth, known for his penchant for piracy and banditry along the Yangtze River. He led a group of followers who wore distinctive silk clothing and carried bells, earning him the nickname "Jinfan zei" (錦帆賊; literally "Brocaded Sail Bandit").

Eventually, Gan Ning surrendered to Liu Biao, the Governor of Jing Province, but was not highly valued. He then served under Huang Zu, a subordinate of Liu Biao, but again found his talents underutilized. Disappointed and seeking greater recognition, he defected to Sun Quan around 208.

Recognized for his bravery and military prowess, Sun Quan appointed Gan Ning to a command, where he quickly proved his worth. He played a crucial role in the Battle of Red Cliffs by raiding Cao Cao's camp. Later, during the Battle of Xiaoyao Ford, Gan Ning led a daring charge with a hundred riders to break through Wei's defenses and buy time for Sun Quan to escape, earning him immense respect and fame.

Gan Ning was known for his aggressive tactics and fearless attitude in battle. Despite his rough past, he displayed loyalty and courage in service to Sun Quan, contributing significantly to the establishment and expansion of Wu. He is often depicted as a fierce warrior with a bell-adorned hat, a reflection of his bandit origins. He is remembered as one of the most prominent and skilled generals of the Wu kingdom.
