Free Fire (film)

Free Fire is a 2016 British-American action comedy film directed by Ben Wheatley, from a screenplay by Wheatley and Amy Jump. It stars Sharlto Copley, Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, and Jack Reynor.

The film is set in 1978 Boston and revolves around an arms deal that goes spectacularly wrong, resulting in a protracted and violent shootout within a deserted warehouse.

The plot centers on Justine (Larson), who arranges a meeting between arms buyer Chris (Murphy) and arms dealer Vernon (Copley). However, simmering tensions and personal grievances between members of both parties quickly escalate into a chaotic and bloody gunfight. The majority of the film consists of extended action sequences depicting the characters attempting to survive the escalating violence and double-crosses within the confined warehouse setting.

Free Fire premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2016, and was released in the United States on April 21, 2017, by A24. The film received generally mixed reviews, with critics praising the action sequences and visual style but criticizing the thin plot and character development. While some considered it a stylish and entertaining action film, others found the relentless violence and lack of narrative depth to be ultimately unsatisfying.
