Fort (Colombo)
Fort is the central business district of Colombo, Sri Lanka. It is the financial and commercial heart of the city, encompassing historical buildings, modern skyscrapers, government offices, banks, hotels, and shops.
Historically, Fort was the site of a Portuguese fort, and later, a Dutch fort, before becoming the British administrative and military center during colonial rule. The name "Fort" is derived from these fortifications, remnants of which can still be seen, though much has been redeveloped.
Key landmarks within Fort include:
-
The Old Parliament Building: A grand neo-Baroque structure that formerly housed the Sri Lankan Parliament.
-
Galle Face Green: A large urban park bordering the Indian Ocean, a popular spot for recreation and relaxation.
-
President's House: The official residence of the President of Sri Lanka.
-
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka: The nation's central bank, playing a crucial role in the country's financial system.
-
The World Trade Center (Colombo): Twin towers that dominate the Colombo skyline and house numerous businesses.
-
The Dutch Hospital Shopping Precinct: A restored colonial-era hospital complex that now houses restaurants, shops, and cafes.
Fort is a bustling area during the day, with a high concentration of office workers and shoppers. At night, parts of the district transform with restaurants and bars. It also serves as a major transportation hub, with the Fort Railway Station connecting Colombo to other parts of the island.
