Fauna (film)
Fauna is a 2020 Mexican-Canadian drama film directed by Nicolás Pereda. The film explores themes of identity, violence, and the influence of narco-culture on everyday life in Mexico, using a meta-fictional approach.
The film revolves around a young couple, Luisa and Gabino, who visit Gabino's family in a rural mining town. While there, they and other family members discuss narco-violence and its pervasiveness, with Gabino’s brother Paco auditioning for a narco-themed television series. The conversations and interactions become increasingly surreal and self-aware, blurring the lines between reality and fiction, and between their own identities and the roles they play.
Fauna premiered at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival and has since been shown at various film festivals. The film is notable for its minimalist style, long takes, and its commentary on contemporary Mexican society.
