Faroe Islands (Folketing constituency)
The Faroe Islands is one of the multi-member constituencies used to elect representatives to the Folketing, the national parliament of Denmark. It elects two members to the Folketing.
As an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, the Faroe Islands has guaranteed representation in the Danish parliament. The two Faroese seats are generally contested by candidates representing Faroese political parties, often with distinct views on the relationship between the Faroe Islands and Denmark, ranging from maintaining the current status quo to advocating for greater autonomy or outright independence.
Elections are typically held concurrently with Danish general elections, though the Faroese may also hold their own elections to fill vacated seats. The election system uses a form of party-list proportional representation, ensuring that seats are allocated based on the proportion of votes received by each party. Eligibility to vote and stand for election generally mirrors the rules for Danish parliamentary elections, with residency requirements within the Faroe Islands. The results of the Faroese elections can influence the overall composition of the Folketing and may play a role in the formation of Danish government coalitions.
