Evan Lloyd (poet)

Evan Lloyd (born circa 1734, died 1776) was a Welsh clergyman and satirical poet writing primarily in English. He is best known for his poem "The Powers of the Pen," published in 1766, which critiques contemporary literary figures and trends. Lloyd's work is characterized by its sharp wit and critical observations on the literary scene of his time.

Born in Wales, Lloyd received his education at Jesus College, Oxford, where he matriculated in 1752. He later took holy orders and served as a clergyman, eventually becoming vicar of Llanynys in Denbighshire.

"The Powers of the Pen" is Lloyd's most significant and enduring work. In it, he satirizes prominent authors, critics, and publishers, often employing humorous and pointed language. The poem provides valuable insight into the literary culture of 18th-century England and offers a glimpse into the debates and rivalries that shaped the period.

While "The Powers of the Pen" remains his best-known work, Lloyd also wrote other poems and prose pieces. He was a contributor to various periodicals and newspapers. His complete works, though not widely anthologized, offer a compelling perspective on the literary and social issues of his era. He died relatively young, at the age of 42.
